Voice Feminization
Voice defines much of our identity. For a trans woman to feel complete, vocal feminization may be indicated, providing greater quality of life and social integration.
The Goal of Surgery
The goal of voice feminization surgery, performed through glottoplasty, is to increase the fundamental frequency in transgender women.
We consider that the fundamental frequency or "pitch" in cisgender women is around 220Hz, while in cisgender men it is approximately 120Hz. The surgery aims to raise this tone to a natural feminine range.
Wendler Glottoplasty
The most used technique is Wendler Glottoplasty. It is a minimally invasive procedure, performed endoscopically (through the mouth), without external cuts on the neck.
It consists of creating a "membrane" in the anterior part of the vocal cords, shortening the vibrating part and, consequently, making the voice higher.
Post-operative and Care
Recovery requires a period of absolute vocal rest (total silence) for about 7 to 10 days. This is crucial for healing.
After this period, rehabilitation begins with specialized speech therapy to adapt the new voice and avoid unnecessary strain.
